Last Sunday of Church Year

Matthew 25:1-13

November 21, 2021

“You Don’t Know When. So Live Accordingly.”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

There’s absolutely no good reason why Jesus couldn’t come again right now at 10:25am this Sunday.  Most of us tend to think that He can’t come if we’re not in the middle of a war or some other great world calamity. But all of those signs have been happening since He ascended to heaven. We’ve had the wars and earthquakes and persecutions. Plenty of them. Now we may get more of them or we may not. But we’ve definitely already had them and there’s no reason that He won’t come right this second.

“What Are You Waiting For?”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Our Introit today is mainly verses from Psalm 39. I’ll summarize the middle part of Psalm 39 for you. Here it is: “Life is short. What am I waiting for?” That sounds like a commercial slogan for Nike or Gatorade. “Life is short. What are you waiting for?” The right shoes or the right flavor of Gatorade will help you accomplish everything you’ve been waiting for in life. Or it sounds like a commercial for some medicine they’re desperately trying to market to baby boomers. You know the medicine commercials where you get twenty seconds of legal warnings and then at the end, “If you suffer from ‘standing on your head’ syndrome then talk to your doctor about standera. Life is short. What are you waiting for?”

“I’m Ready”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Jesus tells a number of these parables, including the one today about the ten virgins waiting for the bridegroom, that very simply tell you and me to “be ready”. We’re to be ready at any time for the Last Day when Jesus comes again or our own last day when we die.

There are many other things in life that we wait for and we get ready for. Winter is fast approaching this year. Maybe you’d say it’s already here. At any rate, we all know to get ready for winter. We never know exactly when it’s going to come but we get ready. We clean up the yard, rake the leaves, bring things inside, check the furnace, buy coats, hats, and gloves, winterize certain things. Some have generators ready to go if we lose power. We know winter’s coming.

“Give Me Oil”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

There’s a song that many of you probably learned in Sunday School about this parable of the ten virgins.  How many of you remember the song, “Give me oil in my lamp?”
