“Time for Worship and Time for Work”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

We’re going to walk through Luke 5:1-11, Jesus calling the disciples. And this is, first and foremost, the story of this select group of men that Jesus wants to be His first pastors. Peter, James, John, and so forth. But it’s also, secondarily, the story of every one of you Christians. God has also called you. And He’s called you to do two things. First, there must be time for worship just like here in this reading, everyone pressing in to hear Jesus’ word. He’s called you to listen and receive. To hear His Word. Second, He’s called you to work. To serve others. To put down the nets. That’s the rhythm of your life—you need time to worship and then there’s time to work.

“Depart from You? No, I’m Calling You”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

“Hark, the voice of Jesus crying, ‘Who will go and work today?” But that’s not talking about you guys, right? You guys in the pews, you laypeople as we call you, you don’t do godly or important work, right? You’re not like me, a pastor, a church worker, who obviously is involved in much more godly things every week. Much more important things to God.

Sermon Questions to Consider:

  1. Why was Elijah complaining to God? What was he angry about?
  2. How are you tempted to make the Christian faith all about your wisdom?
  3. How are you tempted to make the Christian faith all about your experience [of God’s power]?
  4. In the great catch of fish, Peter saw both great wisdom and great power—but what did that do?
  5. What was it that drew Peter to Jesus?
  6. Paul says in the Epistle that we all want wisdom and power—but where is the wisdom and power of God found?

“Leave Me Alone, Jesus”

Grace, mercy, and peace to you from God our Father and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Last weekend Valerie and I took the kids out fishing a little bit down at Evergreen Lake.  Sad to say, for our poor kids, we once again caught a whole lot of nothing.  A whole lot of “weed bass”, as my brother-in-law always says.  Valerie caught a hook from one of the kids in her head.  Thankfully it wasn’t too bad.  A few trees caught hooks from our kids.  And they’re probably still there.  I caught a hook right through the bottom of my shoe that someone had left there on the ground.  So, as you can see, we caught ourselves a whole lot more than any fish were caught.
