“The Things That Are God’s”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

It’s only money. It’s just money. “Jesus, is it ok for us to pay taxes to our government?” Wouldn’t part of you love it if He said, “No way! That’s your money. Don’t give it to the government!” But He doesn’t say that, does He? He holds up a coin to them and says, “Whose face is on this money? Caesar? Ben Franklin? The government’s face?  Then it’s only money. Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar. Pay your taxes.”

It’s only money. That’s the first part of Jesus’ answer. Calm down and pay your taxes. God puts the government there for a reason. So do your duty under the government. But the second part of Jesus answer is much bigger, “Life isn’t only money. Life is much more than just money. Give to God all the things that are God’s.”

“Make Friends”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Here’s the verse from Jesus, “For the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light.” Interestingly the English Standard Version there says “more shrewd” but every dictionary I looked up said that the comparative form is supposed to be “shrewder”. So, “the sons of this world are shrewder…” I like that because it sounds a lot cooler. Shrewder. And this is important (maybe) since the point of the sermon is going to be that you and I should be shrewder in helping others and loving others and showing mercy just as Jesus is the absolute shrewdest in mercy. And if I were to tell you “be more shrewd” it just doesn’t sound as cool as “be shrewder”.

There are people, Jesus says, in this world who are very shrewd at getting certain things done. I’ll give you some examples of some really shrewd people in this world. Number one, the college football program at the University of Alabama. Their goal is to win football games and make tons of money in the process. If anybody is shrewd at winning college football games it’s Alabama. They’re #1 just about every year. Can you imagine if Christians were as shrewd as Alabama’s football program in, say, providing for orphans and securing adoptions for them? There wouldn’t be an orphan anywhere in the world who wouldn’t be adopted…
