Transfiguration of our Lord
2 Peter 1:16-21
January 29, 2023

Theme: We have something more sure and certain to live on—the Word of God.

The Scripture I’m preaching on today is the Epistle, 2 Peter 1:16-21, so you can follow along with me as you want.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Why do you guys listen to me every Sunday morning? There are a hundred of you out there and all of you are more interesting than me and can probably tell better stories and better jokes. But you come every Sunday and give me your attention for 15 to 20 minutes. Why do you do that? And it’s not like I’m just telling you the weather or the news. I’m telling you how to live your life. How to think. Telling you what’s right and wrong. Telling you about things beyond this life. I’m talking about the most important things in life and you listen. Why?

That is our reading this morning. It’s like Peter stopped in his letter and said, “Now why should you guys listen to me at all?” In the first fifteen verses of the letter he was telling them how they should be living. And then we hit our text today, verse 16, and he says, “Now why should you listen to me? Because, I will tell you, none of this is my word. It’s all God’s Word.” Why trust Peter? Because he was eyewitness to Jesus’s glory at the Transfiguration and he heard the voice from heaven. And even more than that, he says, you have something even more sure—the Word of God in the Scriptures and you should pay attention to it.

There’s a time to weep and a time to laugh. With Christ, a funeral is time for both.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Today Jesus is at a funeral so that’s where we’re going to go. Two weeks ago He was at a leper colony. Last week He was outside with the birds and lilies. Today He’s walking up to the town of Nain and there’s a funeral coming out of town. So we’re going to go to funerals today with Jesus. I’d ask you today to think back to the funerals you’ve been to in your life thus far and we’re going to look back at all of them with Christ there with us. Then I’d ask you to look forward in time to all the funerals coming including our very own and we’re going to take Christ to them with us. We’re going to see every single funeral of our lives with Jesus Christ sitting right beside us.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Today some people are saying that you can walk whatever direction you want to walk in life and it’s all good. It’s all up to you. Whatever your self feels like doing. So if you want to pretend to be a cat or dog and walk around purring or barking, so be it. If you want to be a man or a woman or non-binary, then so be it. If you want to have a baby with no father, or a baby with two fathers, or a baby with two mothers, or pretty much any other combination, then so be it. It’ll be called good. Today, if you can dream up a direction to walk in life, then there will be people who will call it good and right.

But God doesn’t see it that way. The Bible says there’s one direction to walk that’s right and good and there’s an opposite direction to walk that’s wrong and evil. It’s not all relative. It’s not just all your opinion vs. my opinion. It’s not just all “you go your way and I’ll go my way”. No, there’s a way to walk that’s right and a way that’s wrong.
