“Jesus is True Forever”

Is science making us all smarter and making the Bible look a whole lot dumber? Is science proving the Bible wrong or proving it to be a bunch of myth or legend? That’s the view of many people today who don’t believe in God. They believe science is showing we don’t need God at all and that believing in Him is quite outdated.

Now what we must do first is ask, “What do we mean by science?” We must define our terms. That word science now carries along with it very large connotations. Very often the word science is seen as the opposite of faith. So science deals with the hard, true realities and faith deals with supernatural fantasies. Science is the real world and faith is the spiritual, fake world. Science is facts and faith is opinions. It gets to a point where I almost hesitate to use the word science at all because of all the extra baggage the word carries.

“Is Jesus True for Certain?”

Last Wednesday night we talked about the difference between subjective and objective claims. Subjective claims are opinions that can change from person to person. Objective claims are for everyone. They’re either true for everyone or false for everyone. And if all our claims about Jesus are just said to be subjective, just our private opinions, then they lose any value. We aren’t saying Jesus is just true for us. We’re saying He is true for everyone. We’re saying He died for everyone. That He’s the Son of God for everyone. It’s not private opinions we’re talking about here. Whether you think our claims are true or false, they’re objective. They’re for everyone.

Now then comes a second objection. If we can agree that our claim is objective—that it’s for everyone—how can we Christians be so arrogant to say we know it’s true for certain? So it’s one thing to say that Jesus rose from the dead but how can you say you know it for certain? Or it’s one thing to say that Jesus will come again but how can you say you know you’re right? Or it’s one thing to say that it’s dark outside right now, but how can you say you know for certain that you’re right?

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Tonight we’re going to deal with a rather simple point in principle. If I say, “Jesus is the only way to get to heaven,” am I’m saying that’s my personal opinion about it or am I saying that’s actually true for everybody? Most of us have been trained now to think that’s just our personal, subjective opinion. It might be true for you but not for others. This is wrong and we’ll talk about why tonight.
