“Don’t Play Games with God: Be United with Christ”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Matthew 5:17-26 is our text. The Gospel reading. You can keep that in front of you on the insert there and we’re gong to walk through it and see what Jesus means here.

“Don’t think,” He says, “that I’ve come to abolish the Law.” Why does Jesus say those words, “Don’t think…?” Why would He tell us not to think something? Because we do think this, of course. This is one of the games we play with God, we think that He sent Jesus to get rid of the Law and say, “No more rules anymore. Do whatever you want.” And we’re going to see we play other games as well.

“I Just Want to be Perfect”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

What would your perfect day consist of? Would your perfect day be lounging on a beach somewhere? Would your perfect day be on the boat fishing? Would your perfect day be at home with a good book and a cup of coffee?

“You’ve Heard Wrong”

Outline

You’ve heard it said…

  1. That Jesus came to get rid of the old rules.
  2. That God just wants you to be happy.
  3. That Jesus only wants you to try your best.

What God actually says…

  1. He loves you.
  2. He gave Jesus to keep the rules for you and die to make you perfect, righteous, and holy.
  3. He gives you new life to keep His commandments.

“Don’t Tell Me What to Do”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Every one of us here in Church today can think of someone that we’ve been angry with in the last week.  Or probably even still angry with them right now.  We’ve probably insulted this person.  We’ve probably talked bad about them to other people.  We may have even wished something bad would happen to them.  This isn’t uncommon.  Sadly, it’s a routine part of our lives. Us getting angry with others and complaining about them.

“I’m Dead. I’m Alive.”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Jesus says in the Gospel reading today, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who’s angry with his brother or insults his brother or says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.”
