“How to Treat Your Fellow Man”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

The Scripture I’ll be expounding today is the Gospel reading, Luke 6:36-42, so you may want it in front of you. Jesus says, “Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. Judge not.”

In Pride and Prejudice, the novel by Jane Austen, the word prejudice in the title is for the character Elizabeth Bennet who is always pre-judging people. That’s what prejudice is—judging and specifically judging before one has the ability to make an accurate judgment. So Elizabeth judges one man good who turns out quite bad and another bad who turns out quite good. In contrast to Elizabeth is her older sister, Jane, who is always refusing to judge ill of others, is merciful and forgiving, puts the best construction on others, and explains everything in the kindest way.

“Don’t Judge—Live in Forgiveness”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

“DO NOT JUDGE.” That’s what Jesus says. Right in our text today. Luke chapter 6, verse 37. Don’t judge. Now I know that those words are misused all the time. I know that. I know that people love to take those two words like they’re a baseball bat and club Christians over the head with them, “Don’t judge! Don’t judge! The Bible says so! Jesus says so! Don’t judge.” I know all that. I know that there’s a lot of different meanings for the English word “judge”. Different contexts and different understandings. Yes, and I will make sure to talk about all of that in a little bit here.

BUT, it doesn’t change His words. He means what He says, “Don’t judge.” He didn’t say, “Don’t judge,” and then clarify, “Well, I don’t really mean that you shouldn’t judge.” No, He means that you shouldn’t judge. And that means that you and I need to repent. Because we judge all the time. And I don’t mean we judge in the good kinds of judging. Again, I’ll talk about the different judgings in a minute. But first and foremost, you and I need to ask forgiveness because we’re judgmental in the worst way. Because we’ve judged other people, especially people close to us, with no mercy, no forgiveness, no love, and we’ve been total hypocrites about it.

“You’re Going to Get What You Don’t Deserve”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

If I’m going to sit down and watch a movie purely for entertainment, just to get the mind off of things for a while, then my movie genre of choice is almost always action. Some of you may lean toward comedies. Others towards dramas. Others toward documentaries. But I like a good action movie.

In action movies, the theme is almost always the same. Somebody wronged somebody else. And the hero of the movie is going to make sure that the bad guys get what they deserve. Think all the James Bond movies. He always makes sure the bad guys get what they deserve. Or think any movie that Clint Eastwood has ever been in during his entire career. He always makes sure people get what they deserve.

“Do Not Fear; I Will Provide for You and Your Little Ones”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

I want to ask you to take a moment to look at the picture on the sermon insert in the bulletin this morning.  Just study that picture for a minute as I point out a few things in there. This is a picture of Joseph and his brothers.  We heard the last part of that story in Genesis for our Old Testament reading this morning.  There is Joseph who has gotten up from his royal Egyptian throne to step down to his brothers.  He’s dressed in the finest Egyptian clothes while his brothers are barefoot and in rags. But you see the love of Joseph for his eleven brothers.  He’s embracing his youngest brother, Benjamin, and reaching out his hand of grace and blessing to his older eleven brothers.  The picture shows us in images exactly what Joseph actually said. He said, “Don’t be afraid, brothers. What you meant for evil, God meant for good. Don’t be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones.”
