There’s a time to weep and a time to laugh. With Christ, a funeral is time for both.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Today Jesus is at a funeral so that’s where we’re going to go. Two weeks ago He was at a leper colony. Last week He was outside with the birds and lilies. Today He’s walking up to the town of Nain and there’s a funeral coming out of town. So we’re going to go to funerals today with Jesus. I’d ask you today to think back to the funerals you’ve been to in your life thus far and we’re going to look back at all of them with Christ there with us. Then I’d ask you to look forward in time to all the funerals coming including our very own and we’re going to take Christ to them with us. We’re going to see every single funeral of our lives with Jesus Christ sitting right beside us.

Two Comforting Words from Jesus:
1. “Don’t Cry”
2. “Get Up”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Two things you ought to go home with today from God’s Word. First is God is always in control, governing everything in your life for your good. He tells the widow, “Don’t cry.” She can trust Him. And so can you. Second is that God calls us to get up and live. He says to the dead young man, “Get up.” And He says the same to us dead sinners all the time, “Get up and live in My forgiveness and life.” These two things: don’t cry and get up and live.

“That You May Comprehend and Know”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

I’m coaching a basketball team for my son this year down in Bloomington. I didn’t really want to coach it. But no one else did either. We only had one practice before our first game and I taught them a zone defense. I didn’t think it was too hard and it seemed like they all got it. Then we had our first game last Sunday afternoon. And they didn’t get it. At all. We had so many wide open inside layups against us that I lost count and we lost big time.

We’ve all had times we just don’t get it. Something seems easy enough but we’re not comprehending. According to St. Paul, the love of Jesus is like that. It seems very easy and we think we’ve got it the very first time we hear it. “Oh, Jesus loves me. That’s great. I get it.” But it’s not so easy. There are very many times we just don’t get it. We don’t comprehend. And his prayer in the Epistle today is that we would get it. That we would be able, that we would have the strength, to comprehend the vastness of this love. The breadth and length and height and depth. To know this love that surpasses even knowing.
