In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Today some people are saying that you can walk whatever direction you want to walk in life and it’s all good. It’s all up to you. Whatever your self feels like doing. So if you want to pretend to be a cat or dog and walk around purring or barking, so be it. If you want to be a man or a woman or non-binary, then so be it. If you want to have a baby with no father, or a baby with two fathers, or a baby with two mothers, or pretty much any other combination, then so be it. It’ll be called good. Today, if you can dream up a direction to walk in life, then there will be people who will call it good and right.

But God doesn’t see it that way. The Bible says there’s one direction to walk that’s right and good and there’s an opposite direction to walk that’s wrong and evil. It’s not all relative. It’s not just all your opinion vs. my opinion. It’s not just all “you go your way and I’ll go my way”. No, there’s a way to walk that’s right and a way that’s wrong.

“Walk with Jesus”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

I think there’s a little bit of a problem with the translation of the last verse of the Gospel reading today. After Jesus heals ten lepers and only one returns to worship Jesus, Jesus says to him, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.” In English that comes out all wrong. It sounds like Jesus is saying to this Samaritan leper, “Get up and get out of here. Go! Leave! See ya! You’re all better now! Adios! Catch ya’ later!”

“The Story of 100 Lepers”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Why did the lepers stand far away from Jesus and call out for help? Yes, I know leprosy was contagious and they were separated from the rest of society and all of that. But this was Jesus. They thought Jesus was different. Why did they stand so far away and yell at Him? Because even Jesus, they thought, would be repelled and disgusted by them. How sad sin is.

Leprosy could definitely be repelling. It could be repulsive. It had the capacity to completely disfigure you. But imagine that—thinking that even Jesus would be disgusted and repelled by you. That’s, of course, exactly the case with our sin. We know we’re in bad shape when we think even Jesus would be turned away from us in disgust and repelled by us—because of what we’ve done. Because of the disfigurement of our souls.

“No Drive-Thru Jesus”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

There was an article a number of years ago in the journal of LOGIA that said people were prone to treat the Church like a vending machine. The Church is just the place you go when you need to get a quick something. Like a vending machine. So put your money into the machine and hit the button for a quick baptism. About twelve years later come back and hit the next button for a confirmation. About ten to twenty years later, come back and hit the button for a wedding. And then somewhere down on the bottom buttons, eventually you know you’re going to hit that last one for a funeral.

“One Sinner of Ten Who Chose the Right Way”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

I have a friend back home in ———— whose father died a couple weeks ago. He was a wonderful man and a faithful Christian. He was one who was able to see that his time on this earth was very limited. Some people, of course, don’t always see death coming. It comes suddenly. But others are more aware that it’s coming. So a few weeks before he died, my friend’s father started telling his son things that he wanted to pass down to his children. Wisdom from a father to a son. For instance, one thing he told him was to pray the Lord’s Prayer all the time. And don’t just mutter the words, but truly consider each petition of the Lord’s Prayer and what we’re asking. There were many other things, but that’s really a cool thing—a father passing down wisdom to his children.

And it hit me that that’s exactly what we have in our reading from Proverbs today.  In the book of Proverbs, King Solomon does the exact same thing—he passes down wisdom from a father to his sons.  That’s why he says, “Hear, my son, and accept my words, that the years of your life may be many. I have taught you the way of wisdom.” King Solomon had learned a lot in his life—both good and bad. God had given him wisdom more than any other person that had ever lived.  Yet even he, wise King Solomon, struggled to stay on the right path. He wanted his sons and his daughters and all his family to stay on that right path. That’s why he gave his proverbs.

“Clean”

Grace, mercy, and peace to you from God our Father and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Amen.

What’s the longest you’ve ever gone without a shower?  The longest number of days you’ve gone without bathing?  Now I’m not talking about when you were a little bitty kid and Mom and Dad didn’t give you a bath for a week.  Yes, that happens.  I’m talking about when you’re old enough to give yourself a good scrubbing in the shower.  What’s the longest you’ve gone without getting clean?
