“Born Again from Above”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

I was at the hospital the other day and heard the music playing. BroMenn, now Carle, hospital plays music over the speakers whenever a baby is born so everybody in the hospital gets to share the joy. Now when that baby emerged from his mother’s womb, how well did he know his Mom and Dad? Could he pick them out of a lineup? Yes, he knows their voices most likely. But what else does he know about them? The doctor doesn’t hold up the baby and say, “Now, baby, please tell us if this is really your Mom and Dad. Please identify and name your parents for us before we hand you over to them.” In reality, baby knows very little about Mom and Dad at all. But rather is born into this family that he didn’t choose and learns to know them day by day.

A similar truth can be said about this baby’s knowledge of God. The doctor also doesn’t say, “Now, baby, that you’re out of the womb and we’ve got you all cleaned up, please tell us, we’d like to know, where you came from. Please explain to us Who made you and Who it is that has made everything else here and what exactly your purpose is of being born into the world.”

As foolish as it sounds for a newborn baby to know everything about his Mom and Dad and everything about God who made him, it’s as foolish also for us to think that we can and should know everything about God. Why do you and I so often insist that we should or even can know everything about God? Of course you don’t know and understand everything about God. He is God! You are not.

“Perfection”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

A few minutes ago you said these words, “I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,” and so forth. You said the Creed. Now you may not have realized it but you were giving and reciting THEE PERFECT answer to all of life. It was like someone rattled off all the biggest questions of life, “Hey, is there a God? What is man? Who am I? Why are we here? Why’s there evil in the world? Is there any hope?” And then you raised your hand and rattled off thee perfect answer to all of those questions, “I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth…And in one Lord Jesus Christ…And I believe in the Holy Spirit….” There truly is only one perfect answer to life.

It’s like when you put together a puzzle. You know that there’s only one perfect piece that goes into each place. If you try putting pieces in the wrong places, it might kinda fit or look almost right. But it’s not perfect. There’s only one perfect piece that makes it all right.

“Your Starting Position”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

In the debate over how the world began and where everything came from, the Creation vs. Evolution debate, there are very smart people on both sides. There are very intelligent scientists and biologists that insist the world is billions of years old and that humans evolved from lower life forms. But other scientists and biologists, just as intelligent, stand on the other side and insist that all things give evidence to a supernatural Creator who designed the world just as the Bible tells us in Genesis chapters 1 and 2.

“Wisdom for Know-It-Alls”

Grace, mercy, and peace to you from God our Father and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Well, I have to tell you that I received quite a compliment at VBS this last week.  I’m still feeling pretty good about it.  It came from one of the younger kids, maybe in Kindergarten or 1st Grade, I’m not sure exactly.  But I had told them something they weren’t quite sure about and I asked the one boy in particular, “What, don’t you trust me?”  And he said, “Yeah I trust you, you’re the smartest person ever.”  So, of course, you know what I said to that.  I said, “Here, let me take you to my wife, Valerie.  She needs to hear this.”  Haha.

Of course, sadly for me, there’s a difference between knowing it all and being a “know-it-all”.  I’m pretty sure I’ve mastered the second one and miserably failed at the first one.  Sure, I’m a know-it-all.  Did you know that?  Problem is, so are all of you.  And in today’s Gospel reading, Jesus talks with another know-it-all, one Nicodemus.  So I’d encourage you to listen and to think about what Jesus has to say there to know-it-alls like us.
