“Jesus is True Forever”

(Some basic arguments in this sermon are provided by J. Warner Wallace, and Greg Koukl.)

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Is science making us all smarter and making the Bible look a whole lot dumber? Is science proving the Bible wrong or proving it to be a bunch of myth or legend? That’s the view of many people today who don’t believe in God. They believe science is showing we don’t need God at all and that believing in Him is quite outdated.

Now what we must do first is ask, “What do we mean by science?” We must define our terms. That word science now carries along with it very large connotations. Very often the word science is seen as the opposite of faith. So science deals with the hard, true realities and faith deals with supernatural fantasies. Science is the real world and faith is the spiritual, fake world. Science is facts and faith is opinions. It gets to a point where I almost hesitate to use the word science at all because of all the extra baggage the word carries.

“Is Jesus True for Certain?”

(Some basic arguments in this sermon are provided by J. Warner Wallace, Craig Parton, and Natasha Crain.)

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Last Wednesday night we talked about the difference between subjective and objective claims. Subjective claims are opinions that can change from person to person. Objective claims are for everyone. They’re either true for everyone or false for everyone. And if all our claims about Jesus are just said to be subjective, just our private opinions, then they lose any value. We aren’t saying Jesus is just true for us. We’re saying He is true for everyone. We’re saying He died for everyone. That He’s the Son of God for everyone. It’s not private opinions we’re talking about here. Whether you think our claims are true or false, they’re objective. They’re for everyone.

Now then comes a second objection. If we can agree that our claim is objective—that it’s for everyone—how can we Christians be so arrogant to say we know it’s true for certain? So it’s one thing to say that Jesus rose from the dead but how can you say you know it for certain? Or it’s one thing to say that Jesus will come again but how can you say you know you’re right? Or it’s one thing to say that it’s dark outside right now, but how can you say you know for certain that you’re right?

Midweek Series: Jesus is The Truth

Week 1: Is Jesus True for Everyone?

(Objective vs. Subjective Truth)

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Tonight we’re going to deal with a rather simple point in principle. If I say, “Jesus is the only way to get to heaven,” am I’m saying that’s my personal opinion about it or am I saying that’s actually true for everybody? Most of us have been trained now to think that’s just our personal, subjective opinion. It might be true for you but not for others. This is wrong and we’ll talk about why tonight.

“Miracles: The Virgin Birth”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Finally, we come tonight to our last miracle, the Virgin Birth. Parthenogenesis. That’s if you want a big, fancy word to throw around and sound smart. Parthenogenesis. That’s the Greek words for virgin and birth smashed together.

“Miracles: On Skeptics and Faith”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

The text for the sermon tonight is John 9 that was just read. But also I’ll be talking much about Jesus’ resurrection and all those narratives about what happens after He rises. But that was way too much to read all of it. So I stuck with the whole story of John 9.

We’re dealing tonight with skeptics and with faith. Miracles will always produce skeptics. Folks who don’t believe it. And I think all of you, if you’re honest, have been skeptical at times of some of the miracles in the Bible. The one we did last week—maybe you’re skeptical that God talked through Balaam’s donkey. Maybe you’re skeptical that Jonah lived in a fish. Maybe you’ve been skeptical that Mary really had Jesus without an earthly father. Well, that’s okay. Because the wonderful thing about the miracles in the Bible is that they very often had skeptics. And the miracles stand up to scrutiny.

“Miracles: What They Are & Why to Believe in Them”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Balaam’s donkey talks to him. God was thousands of years ahead of Disney on this one. Do you know how many books, TV shows, and movies we have now seen with talking animals? There’s been a few times with my kids that I’ve wondered if we have any books where the animals don’t talk. What’s your favorite talking animal? For a while my brother-in-law had us watching the talking horse, Mr. Ed. You’ve got Bambi, Mickey Mouse, Babe. Then the books. Aesop’s Fables, Winnie the Pooh. Now it’s Piggie and Elephant.
