In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Verse 37, “And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, ‘He does everything.’” Astonished beyond measure. This is how I might translate that for you – [jaw-dropping]. Like how you look when you walk into the grocery store and see the price of a quart of ice cream. But no, that’s astonished in a bad way.

When’s the last time you were astonished beyond measure in a good way? Well, you will be. Let me tell you. You’ll be astonished beyond measure, jaw-dropping astonishment, when you come face to face with Jesus. He’s that good. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak. And He will fix every single other thing that is wrong with us because He’s the Greatest Doctor that’s ever lived. He’s astonishing beyond measure. He’s jaw-dropping good.

“There’s Nothing He Can’t Do”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

The title of today’s sermon is “There’s Nothing He Can’t Do.” That’s coming from the last line of the Gospel reading where they say about Jesus, “He has done all things well.” Basically, “This guy can do everything.”

So I’m going to ask some foolish questions that might sound frivolous but there’s an important point to be made. So there’s nothing Jesus can’t do? He does everything well, right? What about driving a car? Can Jesus drive a car and do it well? Not crash into something? What about build a car or fix a car? Can Jesus do mechanic work well?

“Be Opened”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Jesus is open to all people. When it comes to people, Jesus is always open-minded. There is no one for whom Jesus is closed. He was open to tax collectors, to prostitutes, to Pharisees, to scribes, to Gentiles, to Samaritans, to demon-possessed, to lepers, to blind, to lame, and in our Gospel reading today, to deaf mutes. He is open to love and forgive all people.

“He Does What We Can’t Do”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

In our Wednesday morning Bible Study, we came across an interesting thing in the Gospel reading where Jesus heals the deaf man. It says that Jesus took the man aside from everybody. He puts His fingers into the man’s ears and mouth, He groans, and then He says, “Ephphatha”, which means “Be opened”. So the interesting question is…”Who was Jesus talking to?” The words, “Be opened!”—who were those words spoken to?

You might remember the man was what? Deaf. He couldn’t hear. So if you assume that Jesus was talking to him, that doesn’t really work. He couldn’t hear Jesus anyway. And furthermore, Jesus wasn’t telling the man to be opened. So to cut to the chase, after some thought you’ll realize that the only logical thing to come up with is that Jesus was talking to what? The EARS!  He was telling the man’s ears to open up.
