“Hope”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Signs in the sun and moon and stars. Distress of nations in perplexity. Roaring of sea and waves. People fainting with fear and with foreboding. Powers of the heavens shaken.

What do you think when the Bible speaks like that? Like Jesus in our Gospel reading today? How do you tend to react to those parts of the Bible that describe these various end signs? Sadly, many of us Christians shy away from those parts of the Bible. Perhaps we’re even scared of them. We avoid them. Books like Ezekiel and Daniel, for instance. And especially a book like Revelation. That book we tend to avoid as a matter of course.

But there’s nothing spoken anywhere in the Bible that you need to be scared of. Not if you believe in Christ. Yes, there are some scary prophecies given in God’s Word. They’re meant to be scary to those who don’t believe in Christ. They’re meant to turn them to repentance and faith. But to those who believe in Jesus they all give hope. We hope ultimately for an end to the evil of this world and the perfection of the new world.

“What Help Are You Looking For?”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Let me summarize the Gospel reading for you. Jesus says, “The times are bad. But don’t get drunk.” Basically. He says, “But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap.”  Two words there – dissipation and drunkenness. But basically just two different words for drinking too much.

Now one of the biggest reasons people drink too much is what? I know there are several, of course. But one of the biggest reasons is what? To escape reality. It’s a way, albeit an unhelpful way, to deal with the sufferings and hardships of life. Yes, Jesus is right, the times are bad. Times are hard. And often we look to just escape. To escape reality. To relieve the stress, we say.

“Lighten the Load While You’re Waiting”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Everybody knows that you can get so engrossed in the Christmas season that you forget all about the real reason that we even celebrate Christmas.  Well, the same is true about this world.  You can get so engrossed in this world that you forget Jesus has promised to come back and there will be a life of the world to come.  That’s what Jesus warns against today—being weighed down with the wrong stuff of this world and not lifted up with the good promises of God.  As you wait for Jesus to return, He wants your hearts to be lifted up by His promise.
