“Be Carried and Carry Others”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

The Scriptures today are giving us a sermon on humility. 1 Peter 5, “Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God….”

You are full of pride. I am full of pride. And pride is the archenemy of God. It’s the anti-God. Pride put ourselves way up here on top where two things happen. One, we don’t need God because we think we’re too good for Him and we do just fine without Him. And two, we don’t love other people because we think we’re too good for them. That’s the Pharisees and scribes in the Gospel reading which I’ll be talking about today.

“No Throw-Away People”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

In the last month or so I’ve been around quite a bit of stuff being tossed out or thrown away. I guess it’s spring cleaning time of year. We cleaned out a bunch of stuff from our garage a few weeks ago. Some to the dumpster. Some to metal recycling. A treadmill that didn’t work anymore. An old dishwasher. Microwave. Then our church had the big garage sale out here. Wow! Did all of you have a lot of stuff to get rid of?! Lots of clothes. Lot of household items. You name it. And we took a big load of it to the thrift store when we were done. And now I’ve got a load of electronics waiting to go to recycling. Old computer towers. A laptop. A copier.

“Jesus has found me! (And He will find others too.)”

Grace, mercy, and peace to you from God our Father and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Amen.

I’ll cut to the chase this morning.  What I hope will resonate with all of you when we’re done this morning is joy.  Joy, joy, joy.  As Jesus tells the parable of the lost sheep—there’s joy.  The parable of the lost coin—joy again.  The parable of the lost sons—joy again.  Paul writing in 1 Timothy—joy again.  Micah writing in chapter 7—joy again.  There’s joy all over the place.  Why?  Well, that’s our task.  To figure out—why is there so much joy?  And why should I be full of joy?
