“Our ‘Flesh and Blood’ Brother”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

I just saw a short little Christmas video the other day where two brothers reunited. It was one of these videos where they’re trying desperately to make you cry. And they almost got me. The long lost brother who had obviously done something really bad came back home for Christmas and gets into it with his brother. Christmas is about to be ruined. But it ends with repentance and forgiveness and hugs and smiles and Christmas dinner. All was well.

Christmas definitely makes us all think of family. We intuitively think we should be with our family. Some of you probably won’t be with family for many and various reasons and it probably hurts. Friends have a way of coming and going, but family—your flesh and blood—is always supposed to remain. And that goes even if you’re adopted. It becomes your flesh-and-blood family. We should never forget our family, our own flesh and blood.

Midweek Series: Jesus is The Truth

Week 1: Is Jesus True for Everyone?

(Objective vs. Subjective Truth)

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Tonight we’re going to deal with a rather simple point in principle. If I say, “Jesus is the only way to get to heaven,” am I’m saying that’s my personal opinion about it or am I saying that’s actually true for everybody? Most of us have been trained now to think that’s just our personal, subjective opinion. It might be true for you but not for others. This is wrong and we’ll talk about why tonight.

“His Fullness”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

John 1:16, “And from His fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.”  Fullness. What is His Fullness that He gives to us?

You and I so often are feeling and thinking we’re lacking something. Missing something. We have a hard time feeling completely full and satisfied and content. Sometimes we feel flat out empty. And that’s the right feeling because we are lacking something. Something big. But Jesus is our whole fullness. Our completion. He gives us everything we need. When you’ve got Jesus, you lack nothing at all.

“God Up Close”

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

We usually get together with family at Christmas, right? Eat a ham or a turkey. Sit around and chat. Play some games.  But family gatherings can be quite a funny thing. We can’t wait to see our family. Love getting together with family, right? All the Christmas commercials with everybody driving in the snow to get to Grandma’s house.

But as it so often happens, before long we’re quite ready to get away from our family. Our few hours or few days with them is very good and then we’re ready to retreat back to our own domiciles. Why is that? We like our family close. But not too close.

“Behold His Glory”

The biggest thing that Christmas tells you about God is that He cares.  He cares about you.  And He cares about everyone else.  And He cares about all of His creation.  Some people who don’t believe in the true God—they say that our God stinks.  They say our God doesn’t really care because He doesn’t do anything about all the evil in the world and the violence and the wars and the death and the sadness.  They think that if God were real then He should just take care of everything all at once the way they want.  But they don’t understand Christmas.  Christmas shows that God cares more than we ever would imagine.
